Stand:updated on 01.04.2016 International Association of Insurance Supervisors - IAIS

The International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS), which was formed in 1994, defines the international standards for insurance supervision. In addition, the IAIS promotes cooperation among the supervisory authorities and provides training courses for staff members. Its members are insurance supervisory authorities.

The principles and standards developed by the IAIS are of key importance for national supervisory practices: they are used by international organisations such as the IMF as a benchmark by which to judge the stability of national and international financial markets.

The highest decision-making body of the IAIS is the Executive Committee in which BaFin is a voting member. The technical work is performed at working group level and is supported by the IAIS Secretariat. In line with its mission statement, BaFin, as Germany’s integrated financial supervisor, is responsible for one of the world’s major financial and capital markets. As a result, BaFin is an active member of various IAIS committees and sub-committees.
