Julia Wiens took over the position of head of the Digital Finance Steering Committee of the European supervisory authority EIOPA on 28 July 2025. The BaFin Chief Executive Director is the successor to Petra Hielkema, who had led the Committee since it was founded in 2024.

The DFSC ensures consistency in the standards national supervisors apply when supervising digital innovations in the European insurance sector. "The digitalisation of insurers and pension funds in Europe is another area that necessitates standardised supervisory practices. I am delighted to be able to contribute to this as Chair of the Digital Finance Steering Committee," says Wiens.

It is important to Wiens that insurers take advantage of the opportunities offered by digital innovations, but that they are also aware of their risks and deal with them responsibly. A key issue in relation to the risks is consumer protection: "Consumers must not be disadvantaged," emphasises Wiens. The DFSC attaches great importance to this.

Wiens will now continue to drive forward the priorities that the DFSC set for 2025. The Committee is involved in the implementation of the European AI Regulation for the insurance sector. It will soon issue an Opinion on Artificial Intelligence Governance and Risk Management, which provides guidance for national supervisory authorities and insurers. The DFSC also advises the supervisory authorities on issues of digital operational resilience in accordance with the requirements of the Digital Operational Resilience Act (DORA). The aim is to ensure standardised supervisory practices.
