Erscheinung:15.07.2020 Fraud: BaFin warns against fraudulent calls and e-mails from persons claiming to be BaFin’s President or his spokesperson

Several cases have come to our attention in Germany and Switzerland in which a caller claiming to be Felix Hufeld asks consumers over the phone to pay large sums of money into a specific account. In addition to these fraudulent calls alleged to be from BaFin’s President, numerous fake e-mails containing fraudulent requests for payments have also be sent using the name of his spokesperson, Dr Sabine Reimer.

BaFin would like to clarify that it does not ask consumers by e-mail or telephone to pay large sums of money into specific accounts. We therefore request that all those who have been contacted refuse such requests or offers and report the matter to the police or the public prosecutor's office.

BaFin’s primary task is the supervision of the banks, financial services institutions and insurance undertakings that it has authorised to conduct business. In addition, BaFin also works on policy issues related to consumer protection and processes specific enquiries and complaints about banks, financial services institutions and insurers.

BaFin does not contact individuals in order to offer advice on specific transactions in the fields of banking, financial services or insurance and also does not engage in such transactions. It acts solely in the public interest.
